Waist beads are a traditional African adornment worn around the waist and hips, symbolising femininity, heritage, and sensuality. These stunning strands are also called belly beads, slimming beads, waist necklace, body beads, or African waist chains.

Waist beads are made up of seed beads on cloth string, although elastic string and other strings such as a fishing wire can be used to make them up.

Although waist beads has a a very strong African heritage dating back as early as the 15th century, the beautiful body jewellery has since been westernised and women of all different races and ethnicity wear waist beads.

If a women is spiritual then she may wear beads to cleanse her womb or to protect her pregnancy, however a woman doesn't need to be pregnant or trying to conceive in order to wear them for spiritual purposes. They can be worn to protect the body against negative energy. Depending on the woman's spiritual needs, she may wear a specific colour or colours, as different colours symbolise different meanings.
